If you already sew and are interested in learning about patchwork and quilting, then this Lap Quilt Sewing Course is perfect for you. I will guide you through the steps you need to complete a lap quilt. Plus, you will learn the basics of patchwork and quilting so that you can start making your own quilts.
DATE: on request
Duration: 2 evenings of 3 1/2 hours (you may have homework)
Basic sewing skills needed – but beginners are welcome!
Participants: 2-4 people
Suitable for adults and children aged 14 and older
In this course you will sew a quilt made of fabric squares. While doing so you will learn the basics of patchwork and quilting – how to cut fabric, how to sew and iron the blocks, how to join the blocks to rows and the rows to make a quilt top. If, during the first session, your quilt top is not finished you will have ‘homework’ so that your quilt top is finished before the second session.
In the second session you will assemble your quilt sandwich (three layers), quilt your quilt and bind (put the edge on) it. I will show you how to hand sew the binding to the back of your quilt and you will be able to finish your quilt at home.
Your finished quilt will measure 95 x 140 cm (36″ x 48″).
Cutting mat, rotary cutter and ruler are provided for use. A top-of-the-line Bernina sewing machine is available for use during the course.
Materials needed are 3 different cotton (quilting) fabrics that coordinate.
- Fabric 1 – 2 meters for top, back and binding
- Fabric 2 – 1 meter for top
- Fabric 3 – 1/2 meter for top
Batting (layer that goes between the top and the back) will be provided.
